Eight-and-a-half year old Naman Mehta is the youngest of the 18 children from Coimbatore who will learn tennis from international tennis coach Raphael Maurer of the Barcelona Tennis Academy. The 18 were selected from 36 tennis students to undergo a 16-day coaching programme in Barcelona.

About six professional tennis coaches from Coimbatore sent videos of a few of their best students playing tennis. Raphael Maurer picked 18 students in the junior and senior category to undergo specialized training. Of them Naman Mehta is the youngest student.

The aim is to identify children with natural talent to play tennis and train them to become experts. The 18 children are now undergoing intensive training in batches of three in Coimbatore. Later this year, these students will travel to Barcelona.

Raphael Maurer is in the city on an invitation from one of the tennis academies. The chosen 18 are training with him till January 16.
