A regular container service to ICTT (International Container Transhipment Terminal), Vallarpadam, Cochin Port Trust
(CPT), commenced from the Irugur Inland Container Depot (ICD), here today.
The first train was flagged off by CPT Deputy Chairman, G. Senthilvel at a function. The train will leave Irugur on Saturdays and return from Cochin on Thursdays.
It is scheduled to connect direct shipping services to Far East, China, Europe and Middle East from Cochin on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The import containers from the mainline ships can be moved to Coimbatore by the Thursday return service and by availing this service, exports to Europe will save seven days by avoiding Colombo transhipment.
CPT and CONCOR (Container Corporation of India Ltd) have entered into a MOU for managing this regular service, which will be of great advantage to the EXIM community in-and-around Coimbatore District.
CONCOR will provide storage space at very attractive terms and conditions to shipping lines that desire to stack the empty containers at Coimbatore.
Top officials of CPT, Concor, ICD Irugur, Customs Department and Steamer Agents Association and representatives of trade, were present at the function.
