Inebriated man dies after elephant attack

A 40-year-old man who attempted to distract a wild elephant that strayed into the Veerapandi village succumbed to injuries after being attacked by the tusker near Kalaynur here on Monday.

According to sources, a wild tusker entered the village earlier in the evening on Monday and Forest Department officials were engaged in chasing the elephant back to the village.

In the meantime, around 7.30 p.m., the deceased S. Jeevanandam attempted to distract the elephant under the influence of the alcohol. He did this without giving heed to the warning raised by people nearby. The elephant attacked him.

He was immediately rushed to the hospital, but succumbed on the way.
