Nearly 400 teachers of government colleges from four districts were arrested today, when they attempted to stage a demonstration in front of the Deputy Director of Collegiate Education here, asking their demands be addressed.

The demands include, filling of vacant posts in various Government-aided colleges and fixing proper pay scale and grade for those who joined after January 2006 based on their merit, police said.

They also wanted the Government to appoint Vice-Chancellors to various universities, which had vacancies.

Teachers from Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and the Nilgiris districts participated in the agitation.
