SIO protests against student suicide

Members of the Indian Islamic students’ association held a protest today outside the Coimbatore Red Cross organization, against the suicide of Hyderabad Central University student Rohith Vemula.

Rohith Vemula, a research student from Hyderabad Central University, committed suicide following his suspension. S. Sabeer Ahmad, the Coimbatore district secretary of the Students Islamic Organization, delivered the inauguration speech. Terming the suicide as saddening, he said that the incident has raised a huge question on social justice in college campuses.

M.I. Ibrahim, Secretary of Welfare Party of India, addressed the gathering. Slogans were raised against caste-based violence and the centre’s attempts at saffronization.
