A CBI court in Chennai has, on Friday, convicted a scientist and a dealing officer of the Department of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and sentenced them to two years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) in a graft case.
S Jawahar, the Additional Special Judge for CBI cases, also slapped fines of Rs.30,000 each on G. Venkata Narayanan, Scientist-E, and P.M. Murali, the dealing officer in the Marks Department of the BIS.
The Chennai-based Anti Corruption Branch of the CBI registered and investigated a case against the two officers on the charges that they had entered into a criminal conspiracy to regularly receive bribes from the manufacturers of packaged drinking water plants, for license renewal and ISI inspection clearance.
At the end of the investigations, chargesheets were filed by the CBI against the accused persons before the Special Judge Court, under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
