Chaos prevailed at Victoria Hall in the Coimbatore City Corporation premises as councillors of DMK and AIADMK gheraoed the Mayor P. Rajkumar’s after the Budget for the year 2016-2017 was presented here on Friday.

Even as he managed to sneak out of the crown along with other officials, his table could not be spared.

The tussle broke out after DMK Councillors rushed to the well shouting slogans against the Corporation after the budget sessions ended as the Budget, according to them, was not effective.

Raising slogans against ADMK councillors and the government, DMK councillors also demanded a white sheet to know the profit of the Corporation.

“We have been demanding for a white sheet to know the income and expenditure. Even though it was disclosed to a certain extent, the Corporation is only revealing the loss but not the gains,” said a DMK Councillor.

He further alleged that only officials have changed but corruption has increased and no effective transformation was evident in the Budget.

“The Budget is not for the common man but for the development of ADMK party men alone,” he added.

A tussle broke out as council members of the ADMK joined in and abused them. Both the parties pushed each other close to the Mayor’s table which resulted in the breakage of the table.

While one of the legs got broken, plates and glasses kept on the table too did not escape. The tussle continued outside the council hall as both the party members roughed each other up resulting in the shirt of an ADMK councillor getting torn.

The fight could not be controlled even by the police. They later detained 10 DMK-Congress councillors.

Reacting to this, the Mayor said that this was a calculated attempt by the DMK to attract the attention of the party heads in Chennai during the time of elections. Severe action would be taken against those who damaged Corporation property and also for attacking ADMK representatives.

Meanwhile, 9 DMK councillors who involved in the tussle have been banned for three council meetings by the Corporation.
