Hospital gets spyglass to view bile duct of liver

Principal Scientist, ISRO, Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai today said that technological advancements should reach and benefit the common man.

Inaugurating Spyglass DS, which offers high quality view of bile ducts of liver and ducts of pancreas, at VGM Hospital here, Pillai said that India was the place of origin of science and attained expertise in nanotechnology, medicine, surgery, etc., centuries ago.

However, being a slave country for over 100 years, India lagged behind in technological skills, necessitating import of costly equipment, he said.

Moreover, doctors in this tech savvy scenario should be a technologist, having all types of equipment to support his practice, he said.

Chairman of the hospital, Dr. V.G. Mohan Prasad said that SpyGlass was used to diagnose and treat chronic and acute diseases of pancreas.

The removal of large stones from bile ducts via laser, taking targeted biopsy of mass lesion, for finding the cause of stricture, removal of migrated stents were few of the indications, he said.
