Drawing inspiration from NGOs working towards revitalising the River Noyal, a group of seven-like-minded people have joined hands to work towards bringing River Bhavani back to its original form. It all started about two months ago when the core team met and decided to first spread awareness about reviving River Bhavani.
One of the core members of this group shares with us that the water that River Bhavani water is polluted and is unsafe for consumption.
“Mettupalayam has 33 wards. The sewage wastage from all the 33 wards is emptied into the Bhavani River. Our priority is to spread awareness among the public to not to pollute the river. Simultaneously, we will work towards cleaning River Bhavani too,” M. Jaikumar, one of the core members of ‘Save Bhavani’, said.
According to Senior Advocate R.Santhamoorthy, there are two check dams that have been constructed over this river. Each of them has the capacity to generate about 12-mega watts of electricity. However, only one of the check dam is currently generating electricity.
On probing the reason as to why the second dam does not generate electricity, we are told that the river lacks water that is required to generate electricity.
Drawing inspiration from Noyal Nokki, the core members and volunteers showed up in full strength at the function that was organised today. They also met up with representatives of several Coimbatore-based NGOs to seek support in bringing back the River Bhavani to life.
