The 45-days annual ban on fishing came to an end with the arrest of seven Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy in the mid sea on Tuesday, the very first day, for violating the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

The arrested fishermen, all from Rameshwaram, were taken to Talaimannar in northern Sri Lanka, to be jailed.

In her letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa asked the Centre deal with the issue with a sense of urgency, and secure the release of these seven fisherman and their fishing equipment.

She had also pointed out that the frequencies of arrests have increased in recent past.
