The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa is known for making huge promises, and keeping them too. One of her promises this time is the eight-grams free gold for brides-to-be. She has a dedicated fan in is Coimbatore-based Unnal Mudiyum Thambi Raja, better known as UMT Raja. On and off, this city-based artist creates something innovative to express his thoughts. As raw materials, he uses almost anything that catches his eye. His latest creations are the four pieces that he has handcrafted using eight grams of gold.

UMT Raja is employed in a jewellery shop in Coimbatore. Whenever he has time to spare, he creates pieces of art. He proudly displays the four models that he had crafted using eight grams of gold each. This, he says, is his way of thanking the CM for the eight grams gold scheme for brides in the state.

The gold was sponsored by his Managing Director, Lijo Sundar. It took two days for UMT Raja to complete his work.

UMT Raja creates series in his works. The first four pieces has the word “Nandri,” (Thank you), engraved in Tamil. The second piece has number eight in numerals and small letter “g” beside it. While the third of them has letters “CM” in bold, the last one has a pair of hands folded as if thanking someone. UMT Raja puts the four pieces together for us. On taking a closer look at them, we realize that they read ‘Amma.’ It can be interpreted as thanking the Chief Minister for the gold gift scheme.

“I’m a big fan of our C.M. and this is just my way of showing my gratitude to her for introducing so many schemes for the benefit of the people of this state. I’m a goldsmith by profession, so I caught on to this idea of engraving something in gold for our C.M. I’d like to gift these to her. I’m trying to find people who can help me accomplish this,” UMT Raja says.
