The famous Meenakshi temple in Madurai has been promoting its branded kumkum, and what’s more it’s organic!

The sale of the vermilion was launched a few days before the elections.

The pure kumkum comes in packets of three sizes, depending on the quantity – eight grams, 40 grams and 100 grams, with the image of Goddess Meenakshi printed on the sachets.

On the price part, they are less than the vermilion sold in the shops inside and outside the temple. The 8 gram sachet is sold at a mere Rs 3 and 40 grams and 100 grams at Rs 15 and Rs 35 respectively, while the market price of a 100 gram-packet is as high as Rs 120.

According to officials, ingredients such as hard and wild turmeric, borax (venkaram) and alum (padikaram) are pulverized and mixed with gingelly oil in required quantity and then packed in a mechanised process.

As expected, the temple brand is receiving good response from the visitors.
