A Chennai city court has issued summons to E.V.K.S Elangovan, the Tamilnadu Congress Committee president, ordering him to appear for a hearing on August 4, in the defamation suit brought in by Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Justice Jayachandran of the Principal Sessions Court said that there is prima facie evidence on the charges against Elangovan and ordered the summons.

The suit is regarding the statements made by Elangovan on a TV channel on April 30, about the appointment of vice chancellors of state-run universities. He said that there were plenty of irregularities. The suit claims that his statements were aimed at damaging the reputations of the state Chief Minister and Governor.
