On the occasion of Father’s Day, single mothers talk about the challenges of being the father as well as the mother to their children.
Shobha Kumar, Homemaker
Initially it was difficult playing the role of mother and father. However, I have come to terms with my life, and I live for my children and grandchildren. I have always ensured that my children do not miss their father. Being a single mother has made me a strong person. It has also taught me to live in the present. No one has seen the future, and the past will always be past. Today, I’m a single and strong mother and grandmother who has learned to live life positively. In fact, this is what I teach my children and grandchildren too.

From the petted and pampered wife that I once was, to being a single mother that I am today, I have accepted life as it is. I’m proud to play the role of a mother and a father. I have learnt to balance being a mother and a father, and my profession. For me, my teenage son is my biggest support. For every child, their father is their hero. As a single mother, I make sure that my son is comfortable. I’m a single parent, and my teenage son’s friend too.

A mother can never take up the father’s role. She can only double her task of taking care of the physical, emotional, and mental needs; not to forget, the financial needs of the child. So to take care of a child as a single mother, it is essential for a mother to take care of her wellbeing too. As a single mother, I have had a brave face. I have faced difficulties and I have learned to overcome the challenges life throws at me.
