School students contribute savings for a cause

Students of a private school have contributed a part of their savings for the betterment of the Singanallur Lake which hosts a number of birds here.

In a seed planting campaign organised by the Animal Rescuers Organisation from Coimbatore at the Singanallur lake on Saturday, as many as 125 students from the PSG Public School contributed a sum of Rs. 3193 for the lake.

The students also planted a palm sapling around the bunds of the second lake at the same premises.

Joseph Reginald one of the organizers, said that palm saplings were chosen for various reasons including its quality to strengthen the bunds and and act as a host to more than 16 bird species.

“The tree, which is the State Tree of Tamil Nadu, is almost nearing extinction despite being considered to conserve lakes,” he added.

The event was inaugurated by Anusha Ravi, CEO of Park Group of Institutions. Kunhi Kannan, Head and Scientist of Biodiversity Division of Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding and A. Sukumar, Trustee of Protection of Environment Trust also participated in the event along with 20 other volunteers.
