A speeding train fatally knocked down an elephant today near Walayar in Kerala, some seven kilometres from here.
The carcass of the 10-year-old tusker was found 10 metres away from the track after it was hit by the Kollam-Vishakapatnam Express around 4.30 am, Railway sources said.
Forest officials from Kerala rushed to the spot.
On June 20, a 15-year-old elephant was fatally hit by the Kochuveli Express when it was trying to cross the track at Madukkarai. Seven elephants have died in the last 15 days due to various reasons in the surrounding 20 kms.
