Coimbatore-based GV Trust has joined hands with Sthaayi Trust for Theatre in Education to create awareness about various social causes through street plays. As a part of this project, the two NGOs have identified villages around Coimbatore to convey their message against social evils.
Master of Social Work (MSW) students from the Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science (BACAS) have volunteered to enact the street plays. The plays are enacted in a common public area during the weekends in the evening.
“Yesterday we were at Pachapapalyam. Our student volunteers enacted street plays on various social causes like prevention of child marriage, child abuse, and dowry harassment. Our aim is to sensitize the people in the rural areas to raise their voice against such evils. We are using street plays to convey our message,” Jayashree Murthy, Founder, Sthaayi Trust for Theatre in Education, said.
The trust, through its volunteers, is also educating the rural communities that victims of dowry harassment, child marriage, and child abuse, among other evils, can file a complaint with the Social Welfare Board for justice.
In the following week, the two NGOs have plans of visiting T.T. Palayam and Thondamuthur to create awareness in these areas.
