Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government today assured that it will not let the centre impose Hindi and Sanskrit. The clarification was given by the Minister for Higher Education, KP Anbalagan, and Minister for School Education, P Benjamin, in the state assembly today.

Anbalagan said that the state government was keen on protecting the interests of the state. “Imposing Hindi and Sanskrit will not be allowed in Tamil Nadu,” he said. “Also, the rights of the minorities will be protected.”

Welcoming the assurances of the ministers, MK Stalin, the leader of the opposition, demanded that the state assembly pass a resolution against the Centre’s New Education Policy.

Before implementing the new education policy, the centre, in May 2015, invited feedback and suggestions from all on its website. The Ministry of Human Resource Development consolidated the feedback. A five-member committee was constituted in November 2015, by the ministry, to compile a report. The committee submitted a 217-page report to the government in May this year. Following this, the government published a document on its website, and invited feedback on it. The general public has time until August 15 to suggest changes.
