Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya (SRMV) College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, organised their regular blood donation camp recently. The camp was jointly organised by Shanthi Social Services.
“About 104 students of the college donated blood. We had five teachers too who participated in the camp. Every semester we host a blood donation camp in our campus, and interested students volunteer to donate blood,” Dr. S. Velanganni, Assistant Professor and Youth Red Cross (YRC) Coordinator, SRMV Arts and Science, said.
While other colleges in Coimbatore organize cultural activities to welcome their first year students, the SRMV College of Arts and Science Coimbatore puts its first year students through a screening test to identify their respective blood groups, and maintains a record of the data.
During emergencies, when the college receives a request for blood, the Youth Red Cross team examines its student database and identifies potential blood donors. If the student is willing, he/she is sent to donate blood.
The YRC wing of SRMV Arts and Science has plans of hosting an organ donation camp in the future. Students and staff of this college will be encouraged to donate their organs.
