About 10 people, tested positive for dengue, have been admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) in the last two days.

“All of them are responding well to the treatment,” CMCH dean Dr. Edwin Joe told the Covai Post. He also added that the number of cases are more during the period July-January. “We get more dengue cases during this time,” he said.

Officials and sanitary staff from the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation have been visiting all the 100 wards in the city regularly to identify ‘dengue-prone’ areas. They have also been interacting and educating people on the precautionary steps to be taken to prevent dengue. Pamphlets are also being distributed on the do’s and don’ts to be followed.

“We cannot point out that dengue is active in certain parts of the city. Dengue is active both in slums and posh localities,” City health officer Dr. Santhosh Kumar said. People store water in drums that attract lot of mosquitoes. “Our officers visit the slums regularly and we educate the residents to store the water in air tight containers. This will prevent the dengue-carrying mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water,” he added.

At homes, people should be careful and ensure that mosquitoes don’t breed in the gardens, especially near money plants and refrigerators, he added.
