The Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) would start carrying out organ harvesting and perform liver transplant surgeries on patients in the next three months time.

Disclosing this to Covai Post, Dr. Edwin Joe, Dean, CMCH said an operation theatre was getting ready to carry out organ harvesting and organ transplantation process. “The OT will be ready in a couple of months. We will also focus on performing kidney transplant surgeries on patients as this surgery is covered by the CMs insurance scheme.” Dr. Joe said.

“Once a patient is declared brain dead at CMCH, the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) will be informed.

Without wasting any time the respective officials will then get an assurance from the family of the brain dead patient to have the patient’s organs harvested. Once the kin give their consent, doctors from private hospitals will visit CMCH and the procedure of harvesting the organs will follow,” he added.

Doctors from the various departments at CMCH recently underwent a training session on organ harvesting and transplantation. Dr. Manohari Ramachandran was the resource person for this training session.
