Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) today said that it would oppose Kerala’s proposed move to construct dams across Siruvani and prevent it at any cost.

Blaming the Centre and Kerala government for indulging in such ‘betraying activities’ against Tamil Nadu in river water issues, TPDK general secretary K. Ramakrishnan told reporters here that Tamil Nadu was a mute spectator in all river-water sharing related issues.

“Siruvani is originating from Pallathaku in Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu and after flowing through Kerala, it again joins Bhavanisagar in the State, which has the exclusive right on the river, while others can only utilise its water. The Tamil Nadu Government should take immediate steps to prevent the neighbouring State from taking any steps for constructing dams, as the fertile land along the Bhavani river will become a desert,” he said and added that Kerala had already started preliminary work and already moved the Centre for approval.

Stating that his organisation would oppose the move, Ramakrishna said that future course of action would be decided after consulting other political parties and like-minded organisations.
