The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has forecasted that the farm gate price of good quality onion will be between Rs.23 to 25 during September–October. The fluctuation in the prices depend on the onset of monsoon. Prices may vary based on the size, colour and storability.

The university, which analysed the prices of shallot over the past 13 years in the Dindigul Market, advised the farmers to decide accordingly.

The storability of Mysore onion was poor. It cannot be stored for more than three days. This is fuelling the prevailing prices of onions, which are currently as low as Rs.10 per kilo.

Local onions are however fetching Rs.13-16 per kilo, due to its better storability and regular supply from the major onion belts. Seed onions are expected to sell at Rs.20 per kilo.

The demand is expected to increase steadily, with the beginning of the festival season. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh are among the major onion cultivating states in the country.
