Competition brings musical bands from schools together

It was music to the ears and feast for the eyes when musical bands from the 25 schools of Coimbatore district performed, one after the other. The Rotary Club of Coimbatore, in association with Coimbatore District Sports and Games Welfare Association, organised an interschool band competition at the PRS Grounds today. Over 1,200 children from 25 schools participated in the contest.

The award for outstanding performance was given to the musical band from SSVM School. The award for the best boys’ band went to CMS School, while the band from Avila Convent Matric Higher Secondary School was awarded the best girl band. 19 awards were given in seven different categories. The winners went home with a cash prize and a trophy. Apart from group awards, the organizers also recognised the best individual performers with medals.

A press release from the Rotary Club of Coimbatore said that Mahimadas, who served as member of the police band for 39 years, and Shammughasundar, from Coimbatore District Sports and Games Welfare Association, were the judges. Gurpreet Singh, President, Rotary Club of Coimbatore, said that this was the 16th year that the club was hosting the competition for school children.
