Political parties, outfits stage protests; 95 percent shops remained shut

Members of the various political parties and traders’ bodies who attempted rail and road rokos in various places, in support of the day-long bandh in Coimbatore, were arrested by the police.More than 95 per cent of the shops remained shut, and only a few public transport vehicles functioned, with police escort.

The city saw a string of protest with protesters picketing roads and railway junctions. Members of the opposition party, DMK, staged a rail roko at the Pelamedu junction, Irugur Junction and the North Coimbatore Junction in the early hours on Friday. Later in the day, members of the parties including Viduthalai Chiruthaigal, MDMK, SDPI and CPI staged demonstrations in front of the Coimbatore Railway Junction, while the members of VCK and SDPI staged rail rokos separately.

As many as 20 advocates boycotted court proceedings and staged demonstration in front of the court premises.

Members of various trade union associations staged demonstration near the South Taluk office and demanded that the Centre should ensure that those who indulged in attacks against Tamilians in Karnataka should be punished.
