Woman attempts self-immolation in public

Thanjavur: A flower vendor created a flutter by attempting to immolate herself in front a readymade shop in Thanjavur today evening, following pressure from the shop owner to vacate the premises.

According to the police, 37-year-old flower vendor, Lakshmi, residing at Pookkara Street in Thanjavur, had been selling flowers for the past ten years sitting in front of the building where the readymade retail shop is located. The owner of the shop reportedly forced her to vacate the place to make way for his customers to park their vehicles.

A very aggrieved Lakshmi poured kerosene on her body and attempted to immolate herself. Onlookers swung into action and rescued her. She was taken to the police station, but was let off after a stern warning.
