Two police personnel, wanted in connection with the Rs.3.90 crore highway robbery on the outskirts, by waylaying a Kerala-bound car last month, were taken into custody for interrogation.

An inspector of police, Muthukumar of Paramathi in Karur district, who is said to be the mastermind behind the loot, was taken into custody yesterday.

According to police sources, the department received a tip off that the other two policemen – Kulithalai sub-inspector, Saravanan and Head constable, Dharmendran, were trying to move a bail application at a Madurai court. The two were ‘taken into custody’ from near Karur in the wee hours today and brought to the city for interrogation.

Technically, there has been no complaint from Anwar, the businessman from Malappuram in Kerala, about the loss of money during the incident on August 25. He had reported that only the car was taken by a five member gang – three in police uniform, the sources said.

Based on this, police are interrogating six persons – three policemen and three others from Kerala, from whom police have recovered Rs.10 lakhs. The three from Kerala are also involved in a hawala racket.

All the six are expected to be produced in court and remanded in connection with the case of speeding away with the vehicle, the sources added.
