Authorities of the Coimbatore Corporation have decided to lay a road on the other bund of the Big Tank in order to prevent its overflow during the monsoons.

The Big Tank is spread over 327 acres of Ukkadam region. Water from the Noyyal River flows into the tank through Sethumavaikkal. When it overflows, the excess water reaches Valankulam through another channel. Recently, the Corporation constructed a motorable road on the eastern bund of the Big Tank at a cost of Rs.4.95 crores. This road is 1.2 km long and 5.5 metres wide. Two-wheeler traffic is allowed through the road. In the mornings, people use the road for walking and jogging.

Now, the Corporation authorities have decided to lay a road for public use on the northern side bund too.

Explaining the plan, the officials said that, since the road that was constructed earlier was very useful to the public, they have decided to lay a road on the bund adjacent to the Ukkadam–Selvapuram by-pass road. Presently, the weeds removed from the tank have been heaped on the bund. This will be removed and a kilometer-long paver blocks footpath will be laid.
