Apprehending arrest in connection with the violent incidents during the funeral procession in Thudiyalur of Hindu Munnani functionary C Sivakumar on September 23 here, a functionary of the organisation today attempted suicide by self-immolation himself in his house here.

Anand, 30, Munnani secretary of Mettur block near Podanur, doused kerosene on his body and set fire on himself. However, some relatives and others managed to put out the fire and admitted him to the government hospital, where he is being treated for 60 per cent burns, police said.

According to Munnani sources, Anand feared arrest by police, for the violence and arson that raged in the city for two days. He was further mortified to know that police had enquired about him among close friends, leading to the suicide attempt, police said.

Meanwhile, Munnani state president Kadeshwara Subramaniam visited Anand at the hospital and told reporters that many innocent people were living in fear of the police foisting false cases against them.

The police should concentrate on questioning and bringing to book the youth who have links with terrorist organisations like ISIS, he said.
