TNCSC procures 3.95 lakh metric tonne paddy

Thanjavur: The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) has procured over 3.95 lakh metric tonne paddy from farmers in Thanjavur district against the targeted 5 lakh metric tonne during the kharif season 2015-16 that ended on September 30 this year and just 900 metric tonne paddy till November 5 during the current kuruvai season.

“This is 38,017 metric tonne more than what was procured during the kharif season 2014-15,” P. Manimaran, senior regional manager of TNCSC said.

The TNCSC had procured only 3.57 lakh metric tonne paddy during the year 2014-15, he added.

“The corporation has distributed Rs. 590.96 crores to over 2.81 lakh farmers (beneficiaries) in lieu of the 3.95 lakh metric tonne paddy purchased from them,” he added.

According to him, Orathanadu taluk tops in the district in terms of large quantity of paddy procurement. Out of the total 3.95 lakh metric tonne, major share of 1.08 lakh metric tonne was procured in Orathanadu taluk, followed by 53, 328 metric tonne in Papanasam taluk, 52,111 metric tonne in Pattukottai taluk, 50,914 in Kumbakonam taluk, 41,595 metric tonne in Thiruvidaimarudur taluk, 37,220 metric tonne in Thanjavur taluk, 34,514 metric tonne in Thiruvaiyar taluk and 16,055 metric tonne in Peravoorani taluk. Besides, 1,128 metric tonne paddy was procured through mobile units, he added.
