With the prices of onions continuing to remain high, the Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has advised farmers to store the small onions, also known as Sambar onions, until the end of September and then sell them at good prices.

The prices of small onions (shallots) are expected to rise up to Rs.30 to 33 per kilo in October-November. The current prices are between Rs.25 and 30. The prices are likely to crash post-November when fresh stocks begin to arrive from other parts of Tamil Nadu and Mysore. Also, around mid-September, overseas demand for shallots, especially from countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia will increase.

India is the largest producer and exporter of small onions in the world.
