Chennai: DMK treasurer and leader of the opposition MK Stalin has threatened to move a no-confidence motion against speaker P Dhanapal if he fails to constitute 12 committees of the Assembly in accordance with rules of the House.

The DMK leader said more than five months after the 15th Assembly was formed, the House committees are yet to be in place. The committees are for estimates, public accounts, public undertakings, business advisory, rules, privileges, delegated legislation, government assurances, House, petitions, library and papers laid on the table of the House panels.

The Speaker promised to set up the committees after he and DMK deputy floor leader S Durai Murugan raised the issue in the last session, Stalin said. “If the Speaker does not fulfill his assurance, we will move a no-confidence motion against him,” he averred. As the speaker was not available, Stalin submitted the representation to Assembly secretary AMP Jamaludeen.

He also submitted copies of resolutions adopted at an all-party meet convened by the DMK on the Cauvery waters issue to the office of Finance Minister O Panneerselvam and chief secretary P Rama Mohana Rao.

The resolutions urged the state to convene a special session of the House and also called for an all-party meeting to demand immediate constitution of the Cauvery management board. The meet demanded that the government provide Rs 30,000 per acre to farmers whose agricultural work was affected.
