Thanjavur: In Thanjavur district, the winner of the Diwali race in terms of collections is neither Dhanush’s ‘Kodi’ nor Karthi’s ‘Kashmora’, but the state-owned TASMAC (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation).

TASMAC, through its 210 outlets across the district, has made a record-breaking revenue of Rs 6.75 crore on Diwali day. This is Rs 28 lakh higher when compared to last year’s Diwali day sales, sources said.

According to statistics, brandy brands topped the demand, followed by rum, whiskey and vodka. Brandy constitutes about 80 per cent of the total hard liquor sale, sources said.

To make tipplers happy, checks were conducted by officials to prevent malpractices such as over-charging, an official of TASMAC said.

The liquor trade was nationalised by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa during her previous regime and since then, TASMAC revenue has been providing the much needed financial backup to various development schemes of the government.
