Chennai: As the northeast monsoon intensified, heavy rains continue to batter southern Tamil Nadu with weathermen predicting more rain in the next two days.

The Meteorological Department on Monday said that heavy rain may occur at isolated places in Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Nagapattinam districts. Nannilam (Tiruvarur district) recorded a maximum rainfall of 8 cm in the last 24 hours.

Officials said a low pressure trough (depression) can be seen over southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lankan coast. Another low pressure trough is developing from coastal Karnataka up to Kerala. With this, rain is expected over Tamil Nadu, south and coastal Karnataka, Kerala and isolated parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh. Andaman and Nicobar Islands may also witness light showers.
