Members of various opposition parties including the DMK, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), CPI, CPI (M) and VCK staged demonstrations in various places against the Centre’s demonetisation move here on Monday.

Following the earlier proposed agitation, members of the DMK and TNCC raised slogans against the lack of planning before scrapping the high denomination notes as they felt that ordinary citizens suffered a great deal.

Participating in the protest held near the South Taluk Office, A Raja, former MLA, said that the Centre should consider revising its proposal as soon as possible.

More than 300 members participated with pictures of the scrapped notes stuck to bricks to show their protest.

Meanwhile, members of CPI, CPI (M) and VCK gathered near the Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) office on the State Bank Road near the District Collectorate to besiege the same. However, the members, who were quite audible, did not make any attempt to stage a road roko or to attempt to besiege the office and were later pacified by the city police.

Similar demonstrations were held in various parts of the city, including the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Interstate bus services disrupted

The protest called by the opposition was felt in the neighbouring state of Kerala too as bus transport between the states stopped.

The Kerala State-run buses did not ply on the day leaving passengers disappointed and the Ukkadam bus terminus deserted.
