Corporation Commissioner and Special Officer Dr K. Vijayakarthikeyan and Pollachi Sub-Collector Gayathri Krishnan today inaugurated the first reserve site at Madukkarai where 500 saplings were planted.

One of the trees that were meant to be cut down on the Pollachi Road was also transplanted to the reserve site by officials from the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation.

These saplings are meant to improve the lung space in the area.

Secretary of Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore, R. Raveendran, said that volunteers would take care of the reserve site where treated water would be used. “In the same manner the reserve land in Trichy Road will also be developed,” he added.

Rathinam College would be supplying the treated water.

Social activist Timple Lulu said, “Once these saplings grow up to 10 feet they will be shifted to the areas in the city which have already been marked to be developed as tree park.”

Commissioner Vijayakarthikeyan said that he would like to implement the technique in other reserve sites too.
