Chennai: Former Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi, who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, will be discharged on Tuesday as his condition has improved, say hospital sources.

Karunanidhi was readmitted to the hospital a few days ago after he complained of uneasiness in breathing. He underwent tracheotomy to optimise breathing. After the procedure, his condition improved and he even watched Rajinikanth starrer ‘Baasha’ on his laptop, sources said.

On Saturday, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi visited him and said the leader is doing well. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, he said, “I just met him, I wanted to personally wish him a speedy recovery. I was happy to see that he is doing well and the doctors told me that he is going home pretty soon, which is good news.”

Meanwhile, the DMK headquarters has issued a statement, asking party workers and friends not to visit Karunanidhi since he needs rest. However, senior DMK leaders kept thronging the hospital to enquire about the health of the party supremo. Karunanidhi’s readmission to the hospital comes about a week after he was discharged from there on December 7, following a week-long treatment for an allergy to a drug.

On October 25, the DMK had announced that Karunanidhi was suffering from allergy caused by a medicine he has been using and was advised rest by doctors. The leader, who has of late not been seen regularly in public, is confined to his home, although he has been issuing statements and reacting on key matters such as demonetisation.

He also skipped campaigning during the by-election to three state Assembly seats last month. The ruling AIADMK won all three constituencies. Meanwhile, Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, leaders of political parties, including Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Su Thirunavukkarasar, former TNCC chief E V K S Elangovan, CPI senior leader Tha Pandian, PMK leader and Dharmapuri Lok Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss and VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan visited Kauvery Hospital and enquired about the health of the DMK patriarch.
