About two years ago, Praveen a native of Perambalur District was pursuing his B.Ed. in Coimbatore. On one of his visits to his hometown, he noticed that not every child was attending school. On visiting the schools in his district, he got to know that they lacked basic facilities like library, laboratory and toilets for girls, which prevented the girls from going to school. He was very saddened by what he saw and experienced.

Thus, he made up his mind to discontinue his education and decided to work towards helping students, especially girls, pursue education.

“In 2013 the Karaka Educational Trust was registered with the aim of supporting the education of deserving students who hail from economically weak backgrounds.” Praveen says.

Ever since the Trust has been established, it has sponsored coaching classes for eight batches of students preparing them for Village Administrative Officer (VAO) exams. Each batch that was trained had about 30 students who could not afford to pay for their coaching classes. The team of professors from the Department of Politics and Public Administration, University of Madras volunteered to train the student. The Trust sponsored study material for the students as well.

“I have a regular source of income from agricultural lands, thus I am able to pay my monthly bills.” he says. Praveen does not like the idea of recruiting people to help him with the activities of the Trust. Instead he tries to manage all by himself. The funds that are saved this way are used for the projects.

In order to sensitize the public about child abuse and harassment of women, the Trust has planned a massive Guinness Record attempt in Coimbatore.

“If about 7,500 people register for this event the Guinness record for the largest campaign for stopping child abuse and harassment of women will be created.” Praveen says.

Participation in this campaign is through registration only. Online and offline registration is available. Last date for registration isSeptember 25. This event is scheduled to take place on October 11 at CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex. Registration fee is Rs. 100. Participation certificate will be issued to all registered participants and volunteers will be also be given a certificate for services rendered.
