Villagers today conducted banned Rekhla races in Ettimadai on the outskirts, to air their protest against the ban on the traditional sport and also on Jallikkattu.

According to police, some 80 bullock carts participated in the race in a field off Coimbatore-Palakkad Main Road, some 20 km from here.

People from 15 nearby villages cheered the cart-drivers and raised slogans demanding lifting of the ban on bull-sports.

Meanwhile, around 2,000 DMK activists staged a demonstration here seeking to lift the ban on Jallikkattu. They raised slogans against the Centre and the State Government for not taking efforts to lift the ban on the sport, which is the pride of Tamils and also not promulgating ordinance, allowing its conduct.

Former Ministers M. Kannappan and Pongalur N. Palanisamy, four Coimbatore district Presidents and several functionaries took part.
