384 kg of banned plastic material seized in surprise raid

Huge amount of banned plastic materials were seized across the city in a surprise raid by the Coimbatore Corporation.

Production, sales and use of plastic materials below 50 microns was banned in Coimbatore from May 1 and violators will be fined, according to a corporation statement.

The corporation conducted a surprise raid across five regions over four days till today. The raid, led by Corporation Commissioner Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan, seized 384 kg of plastic materials that included carry bags, cups and plastic plates from 274 shops and levied fine on the defaulters.

The Commissioner said, “We request people and business owners across the city to stop using plastic materials and help in achieving a plastic-free Coimbatore.” He added that he has ordered his subordinates to conduct such raids time to time and take strict action against defaulters.
