​Chennai: The Chennai Silks showroom, seven storied structure, that suffered damages after fire ravaged it for over two days, will be pulled down.

Finance Minister D.Jayakumar said experts from Anna University and Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) found that the building became structurally weak after the fire. The building will be brought down soon, the finance minister said.

The textile showroom caught fire early Wednesday early morning and continued to rage till the fire was put out on Thursday.

The severe heat in the top floors of the building caused them to cave in on Thursday. The finance minister said that the building will have to be brought down manually, brick by brick, as it was located in a congested area.

Authorities said the owners of the building had permission to construct only four floors but had violated the norms and built three more floors.

The highly inflammable false ceilings and other interior decorative items fuelled the fire. Access to fire tenders to hindered the fire fighters.

It is learnt the Mumbai based New India Assurance Company Ltd has insured the building and the stock-in-trade. The losses are expected to run into several crores as the entire building was gutted along with stocks of sarees and dress materials.

Fortunately, no lives were lost in the fire. All the 12 employees inside when the fire raged were rescued on Wednesday within few hours after the building caught fire on Wednesday.
