The Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Disabled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) Coimbatore district secretary S Punitha has in a petition to the District Collector sought Government takeover of the Tirupur Deaf School.

A lot of charges have been raised against the school in Gothapalayam where its correspondent K Murugaswamy was arrested, following sexual harassment allegations and released on bail recently.

Punitha told mediapersons, “The Tirupur Deaf School correspondent sexually harassed students and was arrested. The school which has more than 110 students was functioning really well, but now, it is in a very bad state. Our demand is that the State Government run the school.’’

The petition also noted that the welfare scheme announced for people with 40 per cent disability was not being implemented properly.

The late Chief Minister J Jayalalitha had announced the implementation of welfare scheme.

“It has been more than a year and a half year since the scheme was announced and yet many of the differently abled were not receiving the benefits. We are not receiving any funds is what the Commissionerate for the Welfare of Differently Abled said. Only in India, differently-abled people are treated so badly,” Punitha added.
