What to do when eggs go rotten? Easy. Sell it to any hotel in Salem for lower rates than the market price. This is what some people in Salem had been doing till they were eventually caught by angry Namakkal egg suppliers who had nearly lost their business because of the rotten egg business.

In what could be a stinky incident, Salem based Namakkal egg suppliers found out that some unidentified persons in Salem had been selling rotten and broken eggs to hotels in the city for lower rates.

According to one of the suppliers, most of them buy eggs from poultries in Namakkal and supply it to hotels all over Salem for the current market price.

However, to their shock, the suppliers have found out that the hoteliers have stopped buying eggs from them. When questioned, they had found out that the hoteliers have been procuring broken eggs from some unauthorized dealers based in Salem for lower rates than the market value.

The members of the Salem Egg Merchants’ Welfare Association, filed a complaint on September 19 with the District Food Safety Officer, Anuradha and she had promised to look into the problem.

“The culprits sell eggs that could have been broken the previous night very early in the morning to avoid getting caught. The broken eggs rot very quickly and can cause serious ailments when consumed,” one of the merchants said.

In the meantime, the investigation team had received a tip off that a van was reportedly transporting rotten and broken eggs for sale. The van was eventually waylaid and handed over to the Food Safety Department.

The officials and merchants requested the public not to buy broken eggs as they would be largely rotten and could cause ailments.
