Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has requested the Centre to intervene and secure the release of the 11 Indian fishermen who were detained by the Kuwaiti police.

In yet another letter to the Prime Minister, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said that ten fishermen from Tamil Nadu and one from Kerala went to Kuwait in July 2015. Their sponsor would send them to the sea for six months but didn’t pay the salary that was agreed upon. The fishermen “struggled to barely sustain themselves” and couldn’t send money to their families back in India, she said.

The sponsor refused to issue return passage to India. The 11 fishermen were arrested by the local police, based on a false complaint from their sponsor.

The Chief Minister, in the letter, said that their passports were with the sponsor and asked the Prime Minister to instruct the Ministry of External Affairs to order the Embassy of India in Kuwait to take all steps required to bring these fishermen back to India.
