The Coimbatore City Police, on Monday, seized 185 liquor bottles which were meant for sale on Independence Day.

According to the police, more than 25 persons were arrested for the possession of liquor bottles, which were meant for sale in areas including Gandhipuram, Saibaba Colony, Ukkadam, and Ramanathapuram.

25 cases were registered against the accused. All the accused were later released on their own bail.

A Coimbatore-based activist has however claimed that the arrest was eyewash as the sale continued even after the raid. “Selling liquor on dry days and arrests are common,” he said.

Despite it being a nationwide dry day, where liquor sale is banned all over the country, there were many instances where the sale went on openly, near the TASMAC outlets all over the Coimbatore city.
