24 trucks with medical waste seized, one taken into custody

Police seized 24 trucks with medical waste from Kerala, meant for dumping in a private farm for segregation and recycle, on the city outskirts.

Noticing the trucks moving towards the farm belonging to one Chellappan Gounder in Nellikode, general public prevented them and informed police and local authorities last evening, police said today.

The rural police and local panchayat officials rushed to the spot and checked the lorries, 22 bearing Kerala registration and two Tamil Nadu registration.

Preliminary investigations revealed that one Mohammed Iliyas has taken the land for lease to segregate the waste and recycle and sell to the prospective customers. However, considering the health hazard, cases were registered against Iliyas, Chellappan and two others hailing from Kerala, police said.

Police today took Chellappan into custody and further investigations were on.
