30 injured as two buses collide head-on

Thanjavur: At least 30 passengers, including 13 women and two children, were injured when two private buses collided head-on near here today.

One of the two buses was heading for Mayiladuthurai from Thanjavur while the other was returning to Thanjavur from Chidambaram when the mishap occurred near the Vayalur pond on the Thanjavur-Kumbakonam road at noon. Incidentally, the two buses belong to the same transport service company based in Kumbakonam.

All the injured were rescued and rushed to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Of them, only four persons including the two drivers namely Riyas Mohamed (30) of Mayiladuthurai and Kaliyaperumal (56) of Thanjavur, were grievously injured and admitted as in-patients while others were treated as out-patients. Thanjavur taluk police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
