3793 DMK cadres arrested in Thanjavur

Thanjavur: Police detained 3,793 DMK cadres, including 531 women, when they staged protests in front of ration shops in Thanjavur district today in protest against the non availability of essential commodities there.

The arrested included four MLAs Durai Chandrasekaran (Thiruvaiyaru), M Ramachandran (Orathanadu), Anbazhagan (Kumbakonam), Govi Chezhiyan (Thiruvidaimarudur) and former Union Minister S.S. Palanimanickam.

The party’s South District Secretary and Thiruvaiyaru MLA Durai Chandrasekaran and others were arrested when they staged protests in front of a ration shop at Kandiyur. MLA Anbazhagan and others were arrested at Motilal Street in Kumbakonam. MLA M Ramachandran was arrested in Orathanadu, while MLA Govi Chezhiyan was arrested in Thiruvidaimarudur.

Former Union Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palanimanickam, the party’s urban secretary T.K.G. Neelamegam and others were arrested at Vadakku Veedhi in Thanjavur.

Though the protests were held at 430 centres in the district, arrests was made at 240 centres only, police said.
