65-year-old trampled to death

A 65-year-old brick kiln worker was trampled to death by a wild elephant near Kanuvai on the city outskirts in the early hours of Friday.

According to police, Radhakrishnan was going to the kiln when an elephant suddenly appeared and trampled him, resulting in his instant death.

The public and kiln workers informed both police and forest department officials, who rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it for postmortem.

Villagers told the officials that the elephant, that has been moving around in the area for the last six months, has killed three persons. They urged the authorities to take steps to prevent such tragedies.

Another senior citizen, Kaliyappan (75) was attacked by an elephant at Samayapuram near Mettupalayam, about 45 km from here on Friday.

Kaliyappan was crossing the road around 6.30 a.m. when an elephant attacked him, creating panic among the residents, as it was very rare the pachyderm enter the habitat during morning time.

After first aid at the Mettupalayam Government Hospital, the injured was admitted to the Government Hospital, here.

Efforts are on to chase away the elephant to the jungles, police said.
