Sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence today seized about 1.406 kg gold bars from a passenger who arrived in the Coimbatore airport from Sharjah.

The officials, during a routine check at the airport, grew suspicious of the passenger’s movements from the time he alighted from the Air Arabia flight.

On search, they found the bars, worth Rs. 41 lakh, hidden in a home theatre system, police said. Earlier estimates suggested that the gold bars weighed 700 grams hidden in the speaker box of the system. But intense search yielded 1.406 kilo gold, they added.

The passenger has been identified as P.R. Divanakaran (51) of Changanassery in Kerala. He was handed over to police, who arrested him.

Further investigations are on.
